View this email in your browser Our August issue of Lifelines Online also brings updates to the Fund’s Coronavirus and COVID-19 Resources page. We’ve recently added a new toolbox talk, Cloth Face Coverings, and updated our Conducting Workplace COVID-19 Screenings and Assessments guidance to reflect CDC changes to testing and home isolation procedures. Go to the LHSFNA’s Coronavirus & COVID-19 Resource Page Message from the Co-Chairmen: Uniting for the Health and Safety of Workers and Their Families A safer, better trained workforce set LIUNA members apart long before the pandemic. These are strengths we can lean on now, as federal and state agencies are requiring strict COVID-19 compliance on worksites. LHSFNA Plays Critical Role in First-in-Nation COVID-19 Standard With cases spiking in many parts of the country, Virginia became the first state to adopt an emergency temporary standard to protect workers from COVID-19. The Fund’s OSH Division played a key role in shaping and adopting that standard. Wearing a Face Mask Isn’t Too Big a Sacrifice There are many reasons why mask wearing hasn’t been widespread across the U.S. Some may view wearing a face covering as a sacrifice. That may be true, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. OSHA’s Silica Directive Illustrates Current Compliance Landscape This directive matches what the Fund has been helping LIUNA signatory contractors understand for the last four years – compliance officers will be looking for full and proper compliance with Table 1. Are Construction Workers at Higher Risk for COVID-19 Complications? Data shows nearly 60 percent of construction workers are at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 due to age, medical conditions and other risk factors. How does this stack up to workers in other occupations? Judgment Can Be Hazardous to Someone Else’s Health The average smoker tries 30 times before they successfully quit smoking. Yet when people try to achieve sobriety for a drug or alcohol use disorder, our society doesn’t show the same level of tolerance or understanding. Preventing Injuries Through Safety Equipment Grants Contractors often want to buy new equipment but can’t afford the investment. Ohio’s Bureau of Workers’ Compensation is finding ways to help construction contractors purchase equipment as an investment in worker safety and health. Developing and Implementing Tobacco-Free Worksite Policies Tobacco use remains highest in the construction industry, where 34 percent of construction workers use tobacco products. The Fund’s new guide aims to help employers create a healthier workplace through a tobacco-free environment. How Can the LHSFNA Help You?
