The spike has focused attention back on the continent after concern had drifted elsewhere, including the U.S., Brazil, India and other countries. So how does the U.S. stack up against Europe? Comparisons with individual countries such as the Italy or Spain are tricky, but the website of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control tallies data for members of the European Union plus outliers such as the U.K., Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Based on its figures, most of the comparisons are pretty grim for Donald Trump.  The U.S. has reported more than 5.4 million cases, nearly triple the 1.9 million reported for Europe as a whole. And given that the U.S. has a population one-third smaller than Europe, the only way those figures could be flattering is if Trump is right that the U.S. really has the best testing in the world. Another key leading indicator that’s blinking red for the U.S. is the daily caseload over the past 30 days, which has remained over 45,000 and one day reached a record 77,000. Meanwhile, Europe has plodded along at an average rate of about 8,800. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease official, has attributed the difference in severity of the outbreak to the point in time when lockdowns were lifted in the U.S. and Europe. When U.S. states were exiting their lockdowns, the country was reporting about 20,000 cases a day—double the rate Europe was reporting when it began easing. Michael Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, has pointed out that in the U.S., many states’ measures were voluntary, and the majority of workers in some regions were considered essential and so could still move around. Contrast that to countries like France, where residents had to fill out a form in order to leave their house, or Spain, where children weren’t allowed on the street for more than a month.  The aftermath is revealing. The U.S. disease tally almost doubled in July, when it had 1.9 million new diagnoses. Europe reported only a 10th as many during the same month. In one key statistic Europe is doing worse: as of the end of last week, the region had reported 184,000 deaths, compared to 167,000 for the U.S. However, as the world has learned, that’s a lagging indicator, because deaths typically occur several weeks or months after diagnosis. Also, the number of deaths above the normal level signal that the U.S. count may be too low, with the New York Times estimating the tally already exceeds 200,000. Europe’s count has decreased every month since April, and the trend so far has continued in August.
