Covid-19 Pandemic

Barber shops and salons are among the thousands of businesses allowed to reopen on Monday as part of the second phase of the city’s gradual reopening. In all, some 150,000 to 300,000 workers are expected to get back to work this week. Many salons are already beginning to take appointments from desperate New Yorkers, who’ve been known to spend a whopping $1,000 on a cut. That’s a good thing because while walk-in service is allowed, anxious customers won’t be able to wait if there isn’t a chair immediately available. The salon experience won’t quite be the same: occupancy is capped at 50%, and stylists are required to wear a mask as well as a face shield or safety goggles. And shop owners must shut down non-essential amenities, like reading and magazine areas and product sampling. Offices are also allowed to reopen along with the city’s playgrounds, a welcome relief for parents who have been cooped up with kids for months during the pandemic. New Yorkers are looking forward to getting back to feeling—and looking—like themselves again. Still, there’s some things that will have to wait. Salons won’t be allowed to perform any services that require customers to remove their masks. Sorry, New Yorkers.
