 Here’s the latest news on the global pandemic. U.S. virus relief may be set to vanish Russian hack shows dark side of vaccine huntHong Kong’s new outbreak tops earlier waves Getting the data on Covid-19 and kids The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to tell pediatricians that children and teens younger than 18 represent just 2% of all Covid-19 infections in the U.S. But state data puts that number at levels approaching 10% in some areas. Bloomberg collected data from states and found wide differences in how age statistics are reported but many indicated infections found in kids are rising as younger Americans do more social activity and get tested more. In California, those under age 17 represented 2.3% of positive Covid-19 cases in April, but as the months have dragged on that number rose to 6.8% in mid-June and 8.4% so far this month. Of all the states, Mississippi has one of the best breakdowns. Those under 17 there made up 9.4% of all cases. The state also provides a more granular look, revealing there are almost as many cases in those 10 and younger, 1,865, as those 11 to 17, 1,933.  Empty rows of seats on a school bus. Photographer: Bing Guan/Bloomberg Yet the CDC continues to tout the 2% figure even though in response to questions it sent Bloomberg a chart, updated Thursday, showing those younger than 17 make up 6.4% of cases. The agency didn’t answer questions about why administrators haven’t updated the information they posted for pediatricians. The data comes as Trump is pushing for schools to reopen. White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Thursday, “The science should not stand in the way of this.” Researchers do agree schools should reopen, but only if they can safely do so, and have the federal and local support needed to put precautions in place.
